History & Humility
Father in Heaven,
Creator of all that is,
All that has been,
All that will ever be.
May we become more attuned to the history
And beautiful layers of life
That existed in this geography before us.
May we have a holy curiosity about this place:
Where our home was built,
Where our family sleeps,
And where we eat our daily meals.
May we have the humility
To hold that there was life here before us:
Individuals who arrived in Denver with dreams,
Families who faced fears on the frontiers,
And communities who followed the way of Jesus
Who invested their lives and love
In establishing the neighborhoods, towns, and cities of Colorado.
May we learn to look
For the holy and hidden heart
Within the history of our neighborhood.
May we have eyes to see
The unfolding history around us,
And consider those who share the same soil.
May we wake to the reality
That we are not the ones introducing You
To our neighbors and neighborhood.
You eternally exist
In the present lives, past history, and future stories
Of our neighbors and neighborhood.
You are patiently and graciously
Inviting us to cross the threshold
And enter the sacredness
Of this place.
Amen.
