A Blessing for Backpacks

Father in Heaven,
Bless these backpacks and those who carry them.
May they hold all that is helpful,
Nothing that is harmful,
And most of all hold hope for this school year.

May they carry lightly the load of learning:
The books to be read and homework to be completed,
The computers, clipboards, and calculators,
And the gift of an education.

May they hold carefully tools for creating:
The new notebooks that mark new beginnings,
The endless possibility with crayons, pencils, and paper,
And the holy imagination that exists within every child.

May they carry faithfully food for nourishing:
Those carrying farm fresh food
And those who don’t have a lunch inside,
Would they both experience the generosity of sharing
Crackers and carrots, cookies and candy.

May they transport graciously the artifacts of belonging:
The keychains, patches, and pins
That remind them of the beautiful life they’ve lived,
And the tattered love notes from parents and treasured photos of friends.

Father in Heaven,
Bless these backpacks and those who carry them.
May their burdens be light,
May their bodies be strong,
May their minds be clear,
May their hearts be kind,
May they be daily reminded
Of your peace, Your power, and Your presence.

Amen.
