"IN THE DIRT" is a documentary film about a group of passionate Native American cyclists who attempt to bring the sport of mountain biking to the Navajo Nation, where no bike shops exist.

Through a grassroots native-led effort, this group of dedicated cyclists and their families have overcome countless odds to build a cycling culture that today has become the fastest-growing recreational sport on the Navajo Nation.

“IN THE DIRT" is a documentary about a group of cyclists who have chosen to take the simple tool of the bike and bring about a new story.

An in-person interview with T.C. Johnstone, the Director and Producer of “IN THE DIRT” will follow the viewing of the film.

T.C. Johnstone

T.C. Johnstone is a multi-award-winning documentary film director/producer.  He has produced and directed multiple features and short documentaries including the award winning film “Rising From Ashes” executive produced by Oscar winning actor Forest Whitaker. The film won 19 film festivals, received US and international distribution and was a catalyst for the creation of the Rising From Ashes Foundation which continues to support the work of peace and reconciliation. 

He is the founder of the Gratis 7 Media Group Foundation which produces films designed to create measurable change in 5 specific areas; reconciliation, equipping servant leaders, assisting the poor, caring for the sick, and educating the next generation. While creating award winning films, they help organizations use film to expand their mission and exist to tell compelling, entertaining stories that inspire people to move from viewer to participant.

T.C. and his wife, Kristen, are partners in their production company Gratis 7 Productions. They live in Boulder, Colorado.


Kiya Kelley

Kiya loves riding bikes and serving as a positive role model for young women interested in riding and racing mountain bikes. She believes mountain biking is a powerful way for us to deepen our connection to both the land and community.

Kiya participated in a trail work weekend on the Navajo Nation in the spring of 2022, at Indian Wells It was a powerful experience for her to return home to her ancestral homelands. In 2023, Kiya coached sessions and events on the Navajo Nation, including a woman only weekend held at the Rezduro HQ. She loves seeing the community involvement that is happening on the Navajo Nation with biking.

Kiya grew up on Vancouver Island, and has lived in Golden, Colorado for 8 years. 


Jules Villalobos (ViaLOBO)

Jules (ViaLOBO) weaves a spectrum of music into his high-energy blends. Not confined by genre, Jules is always willing to experiment with a variety of sounds and styles, he has the ability to curate each performance with his audience in mind combining fresh mixes, exclusive edits, and good vibes. You can expect an unforgettable experience every time he’s in the mix. What really sets him apart is his infectious energy and boundless enthusiasm on and off the decks.

ViaLOBO or by way of wolf is a play off of Jules’ Native American animal spirit, a wolf, and his last name meaning town of wolves. With performances at festivals and clubs nationwide on the horizon, it's only up from here.
